The museum in Sluderno aims to reflect the ecological, social, and cultural aspects of the Val Venosta. The rural environment is presented in sharp contrast to the feudal world of the nearby Castle Coira. The permanent exhibition “Archaic Val Venosta” features an archaeological collection of the valley, enriched by the finds from “Ganglegg” (1997), dating back to the Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Roman times. Another central thematic area illustrated in the museum is that of the water economy. The sophisticated irrigation systems designed to counter the valley’s drought constitute, since the Middle Ages, the densest network of irrigation canals in the Alpine region. The museum also covers various other topics, such as emigration, which misery forced even children into, called Schwabenkinder because they were sent to work in Swabia, the traveling vendors (Karrner), and finally customs and traditions still alive today. Also worth noting are the visit to the prehistoric settlement of “Ganglegg” (about a 45-minute walk away) and the educational trail along the canal called “Quairwaal”, which winds near the museum.
