Il Museo e Galleria Borghese di Roma houses ancient sculptures, bas-reliefs, and mosaics, as well as paintings and sculptures from the 15th to the 19th century. The collection, whose first and most important core dates back to the collecting activities of Cardinal Scipione (1579-1633), nephew of Pope Paul V, preserves masterpieces by Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Correggio, Antonello da Messina, Giovanni Bellini, in addition to splendid sculptures by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Canova; notable is also the collection of ancient marbles. The Borghese Gallery offers the public the following services

Exhibition of the works

The paintings, ancient and modern sculptures, and furnishings of the Gallery are arranged in the 20 frescoed rooms which, together with the portico and the entrance hall, constitute the environments of the Museum open to the public. Works temporarily not visible, because on loan for exhibitions or under restoration, are always replaced by others in storage and are regularly indicated in the captions.

Access to the storage

The Museum’s storage, located on the floor above the Art Gallery and excluded from the normal visit route, preserves over 270 works and is regularly open to the public according to the modalities specified below.

Documentation of the assets

At the Museum’s headquarters, a Documentation Center has been established accessible to the public according to the modalities indicated in the following chapter. The Restoration Archive is consultable with the same modalities.

Printed catalogues

A short Guide to the Gallery has been published in Italian, English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese. There are also complete catalogues of the collections of paintings, modern sculptures, and the archaeological collection.

Educational services

The Special Superintendence for Artistic and Ethno-anthropological Heritage and for the Museum Pole of the City of Rome guarantees scientific control of all educational initiatives, both those offered free of charge by the Museum and those organized for payment by the concessionaire company.

For safety reasons related to the configuration of the historic building, access to the Museum is regulated in two-hour visiting shifts, each for a maximum of 360 people, with mandatory exit at the end of the shift. Ticket reservation for the visit is mandatory. On the occasion of exhibitions, the ticket may be subject to an additional charge. The modalities for free admission and reductions are those provided by law. The Borghese Gallery is included in the Roma Pass, Roma Pass+ circuit. The ticketing service is granted under concession.
