Metaponto, from the end of the 7th century BC, was the site of one of the most important Greek colonies in southern Italy. The Museum presents the reconstruction of the archaeological framework of the Metaponto territory, from Prehistory to the late ancient period, and is divided into various sections that illustrate: • the initial forms of settlement by the Enotri-Choni during the Middle Bronze Age and Iron Age; • the arrival of the Greeks from Achaea (region of the Peloponnese) during the 7th century BC, • the formation of the colony with the occupation of the territory and the development of the city, • the transformations of the Italic centers of the hinterland between the 6th and 4th centuries BC, • the period of Roman conquest and the gradual abandonment of Metaponto.
