Il Geobiolab – European Laboratory of Naturalness – is an educational and museum facility dedicated to the history of the Earth and the evolution of biodiversity: a journey of lights, sounds, and colors that paint the fresco of life in the natural landscape of the Benevento Sannio area. The exhibition project, created with the scientific consultancy of the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences of the University of Sannio – Faculty of Mathematical, Physical, and Natural Sciences –, develops across the 1,000 sqm of the building, surrounded by 25,000 sqm of splendid agricultural land, and is managed by Mizar srl, led by the well-known physicist and science communicator Paco Lanciano. Geobiolab is a fantastic journey through space and time, discovering well-known, lesser-known, or perhaps forgotten elements of the environment around us and, in particular, guiding us to the knowledge of the natural history of the environment and the Sannio territory. The adventure combines scientific research and playful activities, bringing together virtual reality, 3D films, photos, scenic reconstructions, exhibits, “talking” machines, and much more. The visitor thus becomes an explorer of planet Earth, with particular attention to that tiny corner of the world that is Sannio. The trees, flowers, animals, water, but also the underground: up and down the old Masseria del Vescovo or ex Colony, with the help of technology, one becomes aware again that technology itself is not everything; before, around, and beneath virtual reality there was and is something else: the Earth, the Planet of a thousand colors and the iron laws of nature. It is a wonderful world, made of harmony and beauty, but which can also become violent and hostile, bursting with all its force in front of surprised and helpless humans. Here we explore the processes that led to the formation of the Earth’s crust, volcanic phenomena, the water cycle, and the formation of mineral and energy deposits, the birth of flora and fauna, and the diversification and proliferation of species: a fascinating path to rediscover one’s deepest identity, healing, as much as possible, the compromised relationship between humans and nature. The Museum is equipped, on the upper floor, with spaces dedicated to laboratory activities, especially designed for students, who thus have the opportunity to carry out scientific experiments of great interest and curiosity. A visit to Geobiolab guarantees joyful and constructive moments of reflection for both adults and children, school groups, and families, starting from solid notions of geology, botany, and zoology to reach an understanding of the reality and world around us.
