La Fortezza was designed and built between 1833 and 1839 according to the most advanced criteria of defensive architecture and is one of the most powerful fortifications in the Alpine arc. The structure consists of a gigantic labyrinth of rooms, corridors, and stairs over an area of more than 20 hectares.
