La Fàrie Geretti is a blacksmith’s workshop and is part of the tradition of family-run artisanal workshops where the secrets of the craft were passed down from father to son. It is from his father Pietro that Antonio Geretti (Cividale del Friuli 1904-1982) inherited the business and initially learned the art of working metal with creativity and attention to technical tradition, later refining his skills by attending the School of Arts and Crafts of the Workers’ Mutual Aid and Education Society of Cividale del Friuli.
La Fàrie Geretti preserves preparatory drawings, hammers, punches, gravers, fire tongs, anvils, plaster molds up to samples of the completed works, expression of the forge and the soul of its owner, who dedicated his entire life, with skill and inventive passion, to this craft.
In the forge of Cividale del Friuli, the “heart” of the workshop is represented by the forge on which the pieces were heated to be ”batûs fûr” that is worked hot. On the anvil, the red-hot iron was rhythmically hammered until the desired shape was reached, followed by tempering the piece through rapid cooling in water.
Other tools are arranged on the benches: punches and gravers, tools for threading, chasing and round-headed hammers for shaping, wooden mallets to avoid hammer marks on the hot iron during embossing, tools for welding, tongs both for iron and for extracting nails and cutting iron wire. The environment remains untouched, it seems that the blacksmith Antonio might return to his work at any moment.
