La Fàrie Geretti is a blacksmith shop and is part of the tradition of family-run artisan workshops where the secrets of the trade were passed down from father to son. It is precisely from his father Pietro that Antonio Geretti (Cividale del Friuli 1904-1982) inherited the business and initially learned the art of working metal with creativity and attention to technical tradition, later refining his skills by attending the School of Arts and Crafts of the Workers’ Mutual Aid and Education Society of Cividale del Friuli.
La Fàrie Geretti preserves preparatory drawings, hammers, punches, gravers, fire tongs, anvils, plaster casts, and samples of the works created, expressing the forge and soul of its owner, who dedicated his entire life, with skill and inventive passion, to this craft.
In the forge of Cividale del Friuli, the “heart” of the workshop is represented by the forge where the pieces were heated, in order to be ”batûs fûr” that is, worked hot. On the anvil, the red-hot iron was hammered with a steady rhythm until the desired shape was achieved, then the piece was tempered by rapidly cooling it in water.
Other tools are arranged on the benches: punches and gravers, tools for threading, chasing and round-head hammers for shaping, wooden mallets to avoid marks from blows on the hot iron during embossing, soldering tools, tongs both for iron and for extracting nails and cutting iron wires. The environment remains untouched, as if the blacksmith Antonio might return to his work at any moment.
