Il Castello di Peschici scenographically characterizes the already picturesque and suggestive appearance of the delightful town of Peschici. It indeed stands perched atop a high cliff overlooking the sea. From there, one can dominate the Gargano coast from east to west. The Castle was built by the Normans between the 10th and 11th centuries to defend these lands from attacks and raids by Saracens and pirates. Originally, the Castle housed the monks of the Tremiti Abbey. During the reign of Frederick II, the Castle was adorned with the construction of the splendid tower called “Rocca Imperiale.” During the Spanish viceroyalty period, the Castle was further reinforced to give it a more threatening and majestic appearance toward the Turks, who often raided these lands. A protective enclosure called the “recinto Baronale” was hence built. The prince of Ischitella, Emanuele Pinto, restored the Castle in 1735. Demolitions and modifications affected the upper floors and the representation rooms. Following its construction, the various forms of life existing in the territory grouped around the fortress, giving rise to the first inhabited nucleus of “pesclizo.”
