Peschici Castle dramatically enhances the already picturesque and evocative appearance of the delightful town of Peschici. It stands perched atop a high cliff overlooking the sea. From there, you can survey the Gargano coast from east to west. The castle was built by the Normans between the 10th and 11th centuries to defend these lands from Saracen and pirate attacks and raids. Originally, the castle was the residence of the monks from the Tremiti Abbey. During the reign of Frederick II, the castle was embellished with the construction of the splendid tower, called the “Imperial Fortress”. During the Spanish viceroyalty period, the castle was further reinforced to give it a more threatening and majestic appearance against the Turks, who often raided these lands. A protective enclosure called the “Baronial Enclosure” was then built. The Prince of Ischitella, Emanuele Pinto, restored the castle in 1735. Demolitions and modifications affected the upper floors and representation rooms. Following its construction, the various life forms existing in the territory gathered around the fortress, giving rise to the first inhabited nucleus of “pesclizo”.
