The Carnival of Viareggio is definitely a jewel for Italy and even for Europe, since it constitutes the most important carnival in the world thanks to the magnificence and refinement of the allegorical floats that characterize it.
The floats are skillfully made of papier-mâché by highly skilled artists and parade on the Sundays between January and February, carrying luxurious and flamboyant masks: these are huge caricatures, also made of papier-mâché, of famous men in politics, culture, and entertainment. Usually, the facial features of these personalities are ridiculed and exaggerated or, in any case, those peculiar sides or elements that provoke universal hilarity.
The Viareggio floats travel along the seaside promenade, an avenue over three kilometers long overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.
At the head of the parade of allegorical floats must be the famous libecciata, the musical band that cheers this triumph of shapes and colors and constitutes another typical and folkloric element of this unmissable event.
Other events that animate the Viareggio carnival are the classic masked balls and a myriad of similar daytime and nighttime parties.
The World Youth Football Tournament, also called Carnival Cup or Viareggio Tournament, is another prominent event. It was founded in 1949 and teams under 21 participate, both nationally and internationally. The initial idea came from a city tournament held in 1948, in which ten teams representing four clubs and six bars took part. This tournament represents a fundamental cultural moment for meeting young people from different countries and encourages values such as tolerance, dialogue, and solidarity.
