The Viareggio Carnival is undoubtedly a flagship event for Italy and even for Europe, as it constitutes the most important carnival in the world thanks to the magnificence and refinement of the allegorical floats that characterize it.
The floats are skillfully made of papier-mâché by very talented artists and parade on Sundays between January and February carrying extravagant and colorful masks: these are huge caricatures, also made of papier-mâché, of famous men in politics, culture, and entertainment. Usually, the somatic features of these personalities are ridiculed and exaggerated, or in any case, those peculiar aspects or elements that provoke general hilarity.
The Viareggio floats travel along the seaside promenade, a road more than three kilometers long overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.
At the head of the parade of allegorical floats is the famous libecciata, the musical band that delights this triumph of shapes and colors and constitutes another typical and folkloric element of this unmissable event.
Other events that animate the Viareggio carnival are the classic masked balls and a myriad of similar day and night parties.
The World Youth Football Tournament, also known as the Coppa Carnevale or Viareggio Tournament, is another highlight. It began in 1949 and features under-21 teams, both nationally and internationally. The initial idea came from a city tournament held in 1948, which involved ten teams representing four clubs and six bars. This tournament is a fundamental cultural moment of meeting among young people from different nations and promotes values such as tolerance, dialogue, and solidarity.
