United States, a Stay Among Lobsters and Whales of Maine

In America, even the states have a nickname that summarizes their main characteristic. For Maine, “The Pine Tree State” was chosen.

For Maine, “The Pine Tree State” was chosen because its main economic activity is based on the production and manufacturing of wood from the forests that cover the entire territory, from the Canadian border to the Atlantic Ocean.

But Maine also has a second nickname, Vacationland, land of vacations. The richness of forests and the growing focus on protecting the marine environment have been the two factors that contributed to the state’s tourism development, which is today one of the preferred destinations for Americans, including the President of the Republic.

There is something for everyone. In the inland areas, you can experience the thrill of rafting, descending river rapids on huge inflatable rafts skillfully piloted by expert guides. Or you can opt for the more relaxing salmon or trout fishing by canoe, perhaps in the calm waters of Moosehead Lake, where, with a keen eye, it won’t be hard to spot a solitary moose drinking at the shore. For extreme sports lovers, canoeing down the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, a large area of challenging waters invites daring adventures.

In Baxter State Park, in northern Maine, there is an area dedicated to camping, accessible by a small railway and reserved for naturalists, photographers, and hikers. However, if you do not belong to those categories, it will always be possible to rent a floatplane (very common in these areas) to enjoy unforgettable views and scenes.

But attractions along the coast are plentiful as well. In Acadian National Park, for example, a must-visit stop is Bar Harbor, south of Bangor. What was once a small fishing village focused on lobster fishing has now become an international holiday center full of services and affordable restaurants.

In the waters of Bar Harbor, aboard vintage sailing ships rented for the whole day or simple motorboats, you can enjoy Whale Watching, observing whales crossing the cold waters between Maine and Nova Scotia. Or you can take part in deep-sea fishing trips, confident that you will be guided by skilled captains who are expert ocean knowers.
