Since June 2011, a meticulous two-year restoration and the commitment of the Terruzzi Family Foundation – Villa Regina Margherita have transformed into a cultural center of excellence the prestigious residence that Margherita of Savoy, the first Queen of Italy, had built in Bordighera between 1914 and 1916 by the Milanese architect Luigi Broggi. The villa, located on a mid-coast area above Via Romana, today houses a selected core of the Terruzzi collection, one of the most extensive and renowned in Europe, created by the passion of Milanese magnate Guido Angelo. The exhibition path unfolds through spacious rooms: within the delicate setting of stuccoes and decorations in the Lombard neo-baroque style, prestigious furnishings evoke the seductive atmosphere of a period residence. Over 1000 artifacts are on display: precious gold-ground panels from the 14th and 15th centuries by important Tuscan and Venetian authors, Italian paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries, with particular attention to Ligurian, Emilian, and Neapolitan schools, as well as works by French, Flemish, and Dutch artists. Ligurian art is represented by canvases by Gioacchino Assereto, Bernardo Strozzi, and a splendid collection of paintings by Alessandro Magnasco. Also of notable interest are the thematic groups of Italian and foreign landscapes and still lifes, from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Among the countless and precious furnishings – furniture, oriental porcelains, bronzes, silverware, ceramics – stands out for impact and quality the famous Minghetti Service created in 1888 for the Duke of Montpensier, son of Louis-Philippe d’Orléans.
