Located outside the Herculaneum Ruins, the theatre, still embedded in the tuff bank, was excavated through a series of tunnels in the eighteenth century. The visit currently takes place via a series of ramps and tunnels that allow you to see parts of the buried building, descending down to the orchestra level, paved with white marble. The stage area is largely occupied by two large eighteenth-century pylons built by Francesco La Vega for structural reasons. The stage front features the royal door in the center, the two side hospital doors, and four side niches, where the statues originally placed and recovered in the prince of Elboeuf’s excavation tunnels were located, including the so-called Small and Large Herculanean, now kept in the Dresden museum.
