The Roman kiln complex visible near Cesenatico, in the locality of Ca’ Turci (or Turchi), is very extensive. Here operated one of the most important ceramic kilns on the Romagna coast, alongside which there must have also been a large rural-residential villa.
It is a facility of truly considerable dimensions that produced materials of all kinds – including statues – during a period between the 2nd century BC and the early 1st century AD.
Currently, from the outside of the enclosure, two kilns (with combustion chamber equipped with pre-fire) and part of the surrounding structures, made of brick and sun-baked tiles, are visible. Here, in an initial phase, terracotta statues and decorative elements were produced and, subsequently, wine amphorae.
