Imagine a suspension bridge 120 meters high. Imagine being able to cross it, safely, with a good dose of adrenaline. All this is the “Ponte alla Luna” in Sasso di Castalda, Basilicata, a kind of unique Tibetan bridge. Information on bookings, cost and equipment.
The entire area of Sasso di Castalda, located at about 900 meters altitude, is rich in waters and forests with centuries-old trees. The village streets also climb around the tiny, well-preserved historic center.
In Sasso di Castalda, two nature trails start, much appreciated by hikers: the Path of Legality, dedicated to Mimmo Beneventano (originally from this place) victim of the Camorra; the Frassati trail which winds along a path of naturalistic and geological interest.
Ponte alla Luna length
The bridge complex in Sasso di Castalda includes a long Tibetan-type bridge, 300 meters long, while the smaller one is about 100 meters. The two bridges cross the entire gorge just steps from the town. These are suspension bridges over the void with rungs spaced apart that do not form a walkway but a series of points to place your foot.
Ponte alla Luna height
“Ponte alla Luna“, in reality, is much more than a major attraction. Two Tibetan-type bridges (the largest is over 300 meters long, the second about 100 meters) intersect with a route, via ferratas, and paths designed for active holiday enthusiasts. The attraction also includes simpler trails for those not accustomed to via ferratas or who simply do not want or cannot complete the entire route.
Ponte alla Luna Basilicata
“Ponte alla Luna” is a tribute to the beloved “sister” who somehow connects to the name of the small Lucanian village. From Sasso di Castalda, in fact, emigrated the parents of Rocco Petrone, NASA engineer responsible for the Apollo 11 mission which on July 20, 1969, brought the first man on the moon.
“Ponte alla Luna“, however, is not the only attraction of Sasso di Castalda. The Lucanian village, one of the most beautiful for position and care, is located in the Lucanian Apennines Park. On the edge of the town there is a deer reserve and a monumental beech forest called “La Costara”. In the woods is the Charcoal Burners’ Refuge, a one-of-a-kind place where it is possible to refresh after long walks and order meals of the ancient local tradition.
