The Exhibition is set up in the building that incorporates the remains of the Roman cryptoporticus, located near Porta Ascolana, in the southern sector of Norcia.
The rooms hosting the collection include the remains of a cryptoporticus, an underground structure designed in the second half of the 1st century BC to ensure a covered passage in the city’s forum area.
The Exhibition, besides offering a chance to visit the cryptoporticus remains, is part of the Nursia museum circuit that includes the Civic and Diocesan Museum “La Castellina”, overlooking Norcia’s central square, and the Mill and Meadows Museum, which together provide a comprehensive summary of the archaeological and historical-artistic knowledge of Norcia.
The exhibit displays materials recovered at the Campo Boario site during excavations carried out in 2000. The itinerary documents a hut village from the 9th-8th centuries BC and a necropolis from the 6th-3rd centuries BC, one of many located around the city, characterized by pit graves for the inhumation of high-status individuals, buried with rich ceramics, iron, and bronze belongings. A lapidary collection including funerary steles, milestone cippi, and honorary bases illustrates part of the rich epigraphic heritage of Roman Nursia, while two neo-Attic cippi with Dionysian scenes attest to the local practice of pagan cults dedicated to Dionysus-Bacchus. The rooms containing the collection incorporate the remains of a cryptoporticus, an underground structure designed in the second half of the 1st century BC to ensure a covered passage in the forum area. Connected by a staircase to an upper porticoed section, the cryptoporticus was lit by a row of loophole windows placed just above the vaulting spring.
