The Pennine Way is the first of England’s National Trails, inaugurated back on 24 April 1965. Renowned worldwide as one of the most beautiful and challenging long-distance trails, it stretches 429 km from Edale in Derbyshire to Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders.
Walking the entire route usually takes between 16 and 19 days, and it’s generally recommended to travel from North to South.
Divided into 16 daily stages, the trail lets you experience some of England’s finest upland scenery, including the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, North Pennines, and even sections of Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland.
Nature takes centre stage here, with dramatic waterfalls such as High Force, Hardraw Force and the impressive High Cup Nick—a geological formation resembling a giant natural amphitheatre. Along the way, sample local cheeses, unwind in cosy English pubs, and soak up the unique evening atmosphere.
The Pennine landscapes are striking and atmospheric, offering endless inspiration for adventure—and stories you’ll remember long after.
Tip: Attempt the Pennine Way only if you have good fitness, as the beginning features several exposed and demanding sections.

Highlights:
- Peak District National Park: The park mainly covers the namesake mountain range, spanning an area of around 1,400 km².
- Yorkshire Dales National Park: A national park in the Pennines, made up of rolling hills and numerous valleys.
- North Pennines: Famous for its breathtaking views, beautiful valleys, and ancient woodlands. The entire area is designated as an “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.”
- Hadrian’s Wall: You can still see Hadrian’s Wall, a stone fortification built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the early 2nd century AD.
- High Force Waterfall: A natural wonder near County Durham. In winter, snow and ice create a magical scene as the falls freeze.
- Hardraw Force Waterfall: Located near the village of Hardraw in the Yorkshire Dales. It’s smaller than High Force, dropping 100 metres in a single fall from a dramatic rock ledge.
- High Cup Nick area: A classic U-shaped North Pennine valley of remarkable beauty.
