The National Art Gallery is located in the former Jesuit novitiate of Sant’Ignazio. The museum, completely renovated in 1997 with the latest conservation and museographic standards, offers visitors a fascinating journey through Emilian painting from the 13th to the 18th century. One of the most important European art collections, the gallery was founded in 1808 as the painting gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts and became an independent museum in 1882. For the 14th century, noteworthy works include pieces by Vitale, Pseudo Jacopino, Simone dei Crocefissi and Jacopo di Paolo, Giotto, and Lorenzo Veneziano, as well as one of the largest national collections of detached 14th-century frescoes (such as those from the Church of Mezzaratta). The Renaissance section features paintings by the Vivarini, Cossa and Costa, Perugino, and Raphael, preceding masterpieces by Parmigianino and Titian. The very rich 17th-century section offers rooms dedicated to the three Carracci, Guido Reni, Guercino, Domenichino, and Tiarini. The journey ends with works from the Emilian 18th century (Crespi, Creti, Gandolfi). Upstairs is the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints, housing thousands of pieces accessible on request.
