In the 19th century, the museum was established and remains an important study resource for students of the Art Institute. In 1838, in fact, the institution acquired, through the bequest of Doctor Cesare Martelli, 42 paintings, including works by Antonio Campi, Gian Mauro Della Rovere, called il Fiamminghino, Miradori, Piola, Giovanni Andrea De Ferrari, Guidobono, Bonifacio dei Pitati, the Altdorfer school, Mattia Preti, Giuseppe Maria Crespi, Della Vecchia, Benedetti Luti, Luigi Mussi, and Carlo Maria Viganoni. Following the Martelli bequest, various other collections further enriched the museum’s holdings with works such as The Meeting of Hector with Andromache and Hector Reproaches Paris, two of Gaspare Landi’s finest early works as a “history” painter, praised in a sonnet by Ippolito Pindemonte. Noteworthy is also the Circumcision panel signed by Perugino and dated 1498, the Flagellation of Christ canvas by Morazzone, and an Education of the Virgin attributed to Roberto De Longe, as well as numerous paintings from the Zanco bequest: the Mater Dolorosa by Dolci, Flowers Outdoors by Margherita Caffi, and the Roman Landscape by J. P. Hackert. The Gazzola Museum also offers a rich selection of works representing key aspects of Piacenza painting from the 19th and 20th centuries. Finally, it is recalled that the Museum has temporarily deposited with the Civic Museums of Palazzo Farnese the armory from Count Antonio Parma’s collection, two paintings by Lorenzo Toncini and Bernardino Pollinari, and a marble bust of Elisabetta Farnese.
