The Christmas markets in Switzerland are renowned for their variety and excellent organization. Among them, one stands out as the largest indoor Christmas market in all of Europe: the Zurich Christmas Market, held in the ShopVille-RailCity area of the main train station.
Zurich Christmas Markets
As you enter the Zurich Christmas Market, it’s impossible to miss the breathtaking Christmas tree, decorated with over 5,000 Swarovski crystals. This sparkling centerpiece is surrounded by around 160 stands offering everything related to Christmas: ornaments, decorations, angels, handmade crafts, and much more. You’ll also find a wide selection of exquisite fashion accessories and fine textiles. Outdoors, Zurich’s other Christmas markets are a delight to explore, starting from Hirschenplatz, Niederdorfstrasse, and Rosenhof, featuring artisans from around the world. For a more modern festive atmosphere, don’t miss the City-Weihnachtsmarkt in Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich’s central shopping mile.
Christmas Markets in Bern
There are two main Christmas markets in Bern, held in Munsterplatz and Waisenhausplatz. Although smaller than others, these markets overflow with charm, set in the city’s beautiful medieval setting. After shopping or sampling Bern’s culinary specialties, you can wrap your chosen gifts at the Packlihaus—a dedicated gift-wrapping chalet.
Montreux Christmas Markets
No tour of Swiss Christmas markets would be complete without visiting the Montreux Christmas Market, considered one of the most picturesque in the area. Nestled between snow-capped Alps and Lake Geneva, about 120 wooden chalets are set up by enthusiastic local artisans. For families, there’s the Montreux Santa Claus House on Roches de Naye, reachable by train, offering incredible views and lots of fun. A festive train also winds through the town with Santa Claus himself on board.

Christmas Market in Basel
The Basel Christmas Market, known as the Basler Weihnachtsmarkt, takes place in Barfusserplatz, right in the city center. There’s a wonderful range of gifts here, including scarves, plush bears, dolls, stones, felt items, nativity and tree decorations, and plenty of local delicacies to try. Inside the Basel railway station, you’ll find more Christmas stalls showcasing traditional items like wooden figurines, copper pots, and beautiful candles.
Lugano Christmas Market
The Advent Markets in Lugano, Canton Ticino, remain open until December 24, 2012. There are more than 150 stalls selling local products, classic Christmas gifts, decorations, handcrafted pieces, antiques, and more.
In Piazza Manzoni, an ice rink is set up for safe, enjoyable skating. Even first-time skaters can give it a try, with free lessons offered by experienced instructors. Christmas celebrations continue until January 6 in Piazza della Riforma, while dedicated kid-friendly events are found in Piazza San Carlo, with areas for crafts and fun activities.
While Swiss Christmas markets are often a bit smaller than their German or Austrian counterparts, they’re just as famous for their enchanting atmosphere and variety.
