Already in 1914 a museum was founded in Chiusa, later enriched over the years. In 1938, under the fascist regime, the collections were transferred to the Civic Museum of Bolzano, where a so-called ‘Museum of South Tyrol’ was planned. Only in 1978 were these works able to be brought back to Chiusa, where they found their exhibition site in the former Capuchin convent. After lengthy restoration work, in June 1992 the Chiusa Civic Museum was reopened. It now houses the Loreto Treasure (Italian and Spanish artistic craftsmanship from the 16th and 17th centuries), sacred art (from the 15th to 19th centuries), art by and about Chiusa from the second half of the 19th century, when Chiusa became a sought-after destination for artists seeking romantic inspiration, who founded the so-called “Chiusa artist colony” (1874-1914). The museum visit also includes a stop at the recently restored Baroque Capuchin Church.
