Located in the popular Oltretorrente district, the house where the great conductor Arturo Toscanini was born (Parma 1867-New York 1957) represents one of the symbolic places for the memories of the Maestro, who actually lived there only during his early childhood. Donated by the Toscanini heirs to the Municipality of Parma, which restored it and established the museum in 1967, it collects materials mainly from the musician’s residences in Milan, on Via Durini, and in Riverdale in the United States. The exhibition path, characterized by a recent and more modern setup that combines the traditional form of a house-museum – able to convey atmospheres and feelings closely linked to the figure of the Maestro – with modern technological aids useful for better appreciating themes and nuances of Toscanini’s artistic journey, includes musical editions, numerous personal objects, memorabilia, furnishings, paintings, posters, drawings, and photographs. The new route unfolds developing some themes that shed light on the personality and biography of the Maestro, emphasizes the fame that surrounded him, and revisits the main stages of his artistic career and discographic production. Films and listening to the most famous orchestra performances immerse the visitor even more in Toscanini’s life experience. Among the exhibited memorabilia is also a Bechstein piano belonging to the operatic singer Aureliano Pertile, to whom Toscanini was very attached. Other testimonials about the artist are preserved in the studio set up at the “Arrigo Boito” Conservatory of Music in Parma. The Museum is part of the Casa della Musica Institution of the Municipality of Parma.
