The Basileus Archeopark was established in Baragiano, on a hill in the inland area of Lucania, from the fascinating history of the peoples who lived in ancient Basilicata and left extraordinary evidence on the territory – now rediscovered through archaeological excavations -. Right here 2,500 years ago – contemporary with Pythagoras who had his school in Metaponto, a city on the Ionian Sea – lived and was buried with weapons and symbols of power a king of the Peuketiantes.
The Basileus Archeopark is a “gateway” to a journey through history and myth via Lucanian archaeology, a trip that takes place through scenic stations, in an emotional and cross-time path created with the goal to surprise, entertain, and educate through objects, situations, games. The Basileus Archeopark is an archaeological park located in Baragiano (PZ), in the area of Toppo Sant’Antonio. The park extends over an archaeological area that is home to numerous findings including the tomb of the BASILEUS from the 6th century BC, found in the locality of Santissima Concezione.
The Basileus Archeopark offers various interpretative keys—cultural, scientific, educational, and playful—to bring the public closer to the knowledge of antiquity and history. Inside, through scenic reconstructions, it provides a snapshot of Basilicata from the 6th to the 4th century BC. The ancient settlement corresponding to today’s Baragiano was located on a plateau between two tributaries of the Platano river, in a strategic position between the territories of different Lucanian tribes and at the confluence of commercial traffic routes. Along the river valleys, contacts developed with the Ionian coast (Siris and Metaponto) and with the Greek and Etruscan populations of the Tyrrhenian coast. The king of the local Lucanian community of the Peuketiantes was buried with Greek-style weapons (helmet, shield, sword, and spearhead), and the ceramics and the cauldron of the funerary equipment are decorated with stories of Heracles, Dionysus, and Theseus.
