The Archaeological Museum of Atina and the Comino Valley, housed in a former school building of classical style named after the esteemed citizen Giuseppe Visocchi, preserves numerous artifacts recovered not only in Atina but also in the valley municipalities, particularly in the important archaeological sites of Omini Morti, near San Biagio Saracinisco, and Pescarola, in the territory of Casalvieri. In the exhibition path, visitors can admire especially preroman ceramics made from various types of paste, including the well-known small amphorae of the “Alfedena” type and the pots linked to the culture of the Liri Valley, elegant jugs made of refined clay, and bucchero pottery that document the commercial penetration of the Etruscans in these areas; of particular interest are fibulae of various sizes and shapes, both iron and bronze, as well as numerous spear points that testify to the fighting spirit of the Italic populations, like the Samnites, who occupied the Atina countryside before the Roman conquest. Through the lapidarium, which preserves inscriptions and sculptural pieces from the Republican and Imperial eras, it is also possible to take a virtual tour of the urban and suburban monuments of Roman Atina, an important and populous settlement remembered by Cicero himself as “praefectura florentissima”.
