80 Conferences and 500 speakers in the program of the 24th Mediterranean Archaeological Tourism Fair in Paestum from Thursday, October 27 to Sunday, October 30, 2022.
The 24th Mediterranean Fair of Archaeological Tourism, in Paestum at the Tabacchificio Cafasso, the archaeological area and the National Museum, the Basilica from Thursday, October 27 to Sunday, October 30, 2022, is presented with all numbers in the positive: 100 conferences in 5 rooms simultaneously, 500 moderators and speakers all in person, 150 exhibitors (with 18 regional territories represented, 12 Regions, Rome Capital with Municipality X and the Ministry of Culture with 500 sqm dedicated to autonomous Parks and Museums, from the Colosseum to Ostia, Sibari, Phlegraean Fields, from the Naples National Archaeological Museum to the Reggio Calabria National Archaeological Museum and beyond Europe Creativa, Ales, Gaiola Park), 20 foreign countries, 30 European buyers selected by ENIT and national ones.
The Ministry of Culture in its space will present the candidacy of the Via Appia Antica, along the entire route from Rome to Brindisi including the Trajanic variant, for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List (4 regions involved in the route and 100 local entities including 73 Municipalities, 15 Parks, 12 between Metropolitan Cities and Provinces).
BMTA, also in this edition, will implement best practices to develop experiential tourism and sustainable tourism, so that institutions, Local Authorities, and Employers’ Organizations can adopt and implement them in the short to medium term:
- The Conference on the support of the PNRR for archaeological-tourist destinations, in collaboration with the European Parliament Italy Office, is an opportunity to present improvement proposals in light of the ongoing process involving European Parliament leaders, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, the Production Activities Committees of the Chamber and the Cultural Heritage of the Senate, Employers’ Organizations, and major Archaeological Parks;
- ArcheoIncoming aims to increase the demand for European and national proximity tourism by specialized tour operators (present in 10 at the Exhibition Hall thanks to FIAVET, FTO, and AIDIT with pioneers in Italy of experiential travel Piergianni Addis Kel12 Tour Operator, Enrico Ducrot Viaggi dell’Elefante, Willy Fassio Il Tucano Viaggi, Maurizio Levi I Viaggi di Maurizio Levi), traditionally oriented outward but since the pandemic also focused on our beautiful Country. Their participation will include discussions with Directors of state parks and museums on Thursday, October 27, and, as buyers, they will feature in the Workshop on Saturday, October 29, also at a national level;
- Focus on Underground Archaeology with the first National Meeting of Hypogea Cities highlights many underground sites beneath our cities built by humans, such as caves, crypts, catacombs, galleries, labyrinths, aiming to develop a project identifying content and tools to promote an offer characterized by beauty, uniqueness, emotional routes, sustainability, where cities and territories are protagonists. Involvement of the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology, municipalities, regions, ENIT, tourism organizations, and the Touring Club Italiano aims to develop an interregional project of the participating territories.
The International Archaeological Discovery Award “Khaled al-Asaad”, in its 8th edition, named after the Palmyra archaeologist who paid with his life to defend cultural heritage, will award the “discovery of 2021”: the only global recognition dedicated to archaeology and especially its protagonists, archaeologists, who with sacrifice, dedication, expertise, and scientific research face their tasks daily as scholars of the past and professionals serving the territory. The ceremony will be attended by: Fayrouz Asaad, daughter of Khaled, Nedal Machfej, Deputy Minister of Tourism of Syria, Mohamed Nazir Awad, Director General of Antiquities and Museums of Syria, Mohamad Saleh, last Director of Tourism in Palmyra.
Among the prestigious international guests of the 24th edition are also Ahmed Farouk Ghoneim Director of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, Dimitrios Pandermalis President of the Acropolis Museum in Athens, Fatma Naït Yghil Director of the Bardo Museum in Tunis, and Zahi Hawass archaeologist, former Egyptian Minister of Antiquities and Director of excavations in Giza, Saqqara, and Valley of the Kings.
The International Underwater Archaeology Award “Sebastiano Tusa”, in its 2nd edition, will be awarded to the most innovative project carried out by Institutions, Museums, and Archaeological Parks, best journalistic contribution in dissemination, and as a career recognition.
For the Meet the Protagonists sessions, Syusy Blady will discuss “Engineers of the Cosmos”: a surprising cosmic journey, from the ancient Sumerian myth of Creation to the confrontation with new astrophysical theories of Earth’s formation.

ArcheoVirtual, International Exhibition and Workshop, which for 15 editions showcases digital applications and virtual archaeology projects, will address the theme “Towards the Metaverse” to introduce audiences to the prospects emerging in the field of new virtual worlds, with significant transformations in communication, entertainment, commerce modes affecting all aspects of social life.
Furthermore, ArcheoExperience with Experimental Archaeology Workshops aims to disseminate techniques used by humans to produce everyday artifacts, ArcheoStartup with young enterprises of cultural tourism, and the presentation of the EU co-funded project “EU DigiTOUR”, dedicated to SMEs and startups in the tourism sector to access technical and financial support programs, while the community of IgersItalia will gather in Paestum for two Instameets.
The Mayor of Capaccio Paestum Franco Alfieri is expanding the requalification of the large Cafasso Tobacco Factory to adjacent buildings, to provide spaces for international events like BMTA with more room and services.
Campania Region, represented by the Tourism Assessor Felice Casucci and the General Director for Cultural Policies and Tourism Rosanna Romano, will be featured with a 200 sqm exhibition space and at the Workshop on Saturday, October 29, with European buyers selected by ENIT and national buyers, to promote archaeological heritage of major attractions and especially internal areas, following the guidelines of President Vincenzo De Luca, who since 2018 has included BMTA in the official fair calendar (with London, Berlin, Madrid, Moscow, Milan, Rimini).
The Archaeological Park of Paestum and Velia, for which BMTA was conceived in 1998 to support the enhancement process of the site, included from that year in UNESCO’s World Heritage, will reopen its recently renovated Museum and will be represented by the new Director Tiziana D’Angelo and the Administrative Councilor Alfonso Andria, President of the Province at the time of BMTA’s founding, who has been following it ever since, with Mounir Bouchenaki, now Honorary President of the Fair, who was then Director of the Heritage Office during the UNESCO site candidacy and later Vice General Director for Culture.
