The “Travel Pass IATA” is not without risks, as denounced by VISIONARI Non-Profit, an association for the promotion and dissemination of science and technology for social betterment.

The Travel Pass IATA is a mobile application that will be operational starting next July and will contain passengers’ documents, but above all, important health information of travelers that will be shared with all participating airlines of IATA.

The project, however, seems to use a decentralized structure, but it is not clear whether it is a simple distributed ledger or a blockchain or simply a request for consent by the passenger, according to VISIONARI.

An initiative, that of the digital health passport, which is not free from risks: the data collected concern sensitive information of citizens that enjoy particular legal protection, and which can now be easily exchanged between airlines and a multitude of entities connected to carriers.

“Travelers’ privacy could therefore be in serious danger, and such sensitive data could be misused or even illegally used,” states VISIONARI’s president, Luigi Gabriele. “For this reason, we ask that the Travel Pass follow institutional pathways (starting with the Privacy Authority) that guarantee full protection of travelers’ rights and the use of information solely for purposes strictly related to air travel.”
