A new study conducted by the digital leader in the travel sector Booking.com reveals 5 types of travel that will be popular in 2021, for an adventure (or why not, 5) that responds to our new preferences and needs.
Watching for 2021 just started, we can predict that the impact of the health emergency will not only affect the choice of destination but also the type of travel we will book for the coming year.
Summary
The 5 types of travel in 2021
- A trip all for oneself
Likely, solo travel will see a significant increase: the desire to travel will be so strong that it will encourage even skeptics to choose an adventure without travel companions in 2021. Pre-pandemic Booking.com data showed only 17%* of travelers interested in solo adventures, compared to the current 30%** ready to organize such a trip in the future. With 42%** of travelers certain to want to recover lost time in 2020, it’s not surprising to see many interested in planning a major solo trip to start exploring the world again.
- Luxury relaxation
The sudden and unexpected halt to travel has made the mere ability to move a luxury: in fact, 61%** of people have stated they will no longer take freedom of movement for granted in the future. The research emphasizes that the intention to travel again is very strong, but only 13%** are actually organizing a luxury stay (for example in a villa or a 5-star hotel), while most respondents (51%)** are thinking about the final details of a relaxing trip, considered the real treat to indulge in during 2021.
- Family holidays
In 2020, many of us were separated from friends and family for extended periods. For 61%** of respondents, a good part of future travels will be dedicated to reconnecting with loved ones and relationships that have been distant for too long, to rediscover their beloved ones. In fact, 36%** stated that, during this period of forced separation, talking with friends and family about possible future trips was very inspiring to start planning again.
- Weekend getaways
In a time of great uncertainties like the one we are experiencing, it is very likely that immediate travel will increase, with over half of respondents (53%)** planning in 2021 to take more short breaks than in 2019, to avoid any further disappointment. A further 28%** also indicated the weekend as the perfect time for a trip after restrictions ease, to escape reality even just for a couple of days.
- Nourishment for the mind
While the desire to travel has not diminished, it is also true that thinking about traveling abroad is less common (53%**) even with restrictions easing. Traveling within one’s own country or territory to rediscover its traditions (especially culinary) is a rapidly growing trend. With fork and knife in hand, 36%** of travelers are ready to indulge in gourmet experiences based on local products, and 38%** plan to invest savings in dining out within their country.
