The impressive images published on digital media the day after the landslides that split SS 18 Costiera Maratea in two at Castrocucco are the stark summary of the narrowly avoided tragedy. Now it has become an emergency and concerns are rising among tourism operators.
The near tragedy in Maratea on November 30th when, due to heavy rains, a landslide split the scenic highway into two, pouring enormous rocks onto the beaches below, has essentially opened the tourism emergency in Maratea (PZ).

The “pearl of the Tyrrhenian” bases its economy exclusively on tourism, especially seaside tourism. Here, there is no building speculation, unlike elsewhere, but three months (many activities reopen at Easter, but Christmas must also be protected) for a complete solution to secure the rock from which the landslide detached, which, only by a fortuitous event, did not claim victims on a very busy road and for the restoration of road traffic, seem really few unless urgent action is taken. Concerns are rising among sector operators.

“The situation that has arisen in Maratea following the serious slope failure on SS 18 and widespread landslides requires urgent emergency interventions and actions to be planned now for short-term implementation,” says Biagio Salerno, President of the Maratea Tourism Consortium and of Federalberghi of the area. “Our concern is for the summer season 2023 and the upcoming holidays, which have always been a tourist attraction for Maratea. For this reason, we ask to participate in emergency tables that are being set up at the Municipality, Region, and with the competent government agencies. We cannot afford to compromise the tourist season. It would be a disaster.”
