Kaleva Koru is, for example, the brand of a famous line of bijoux crafted in bronze, silver, gold, and enriched with local semi-precious stones, which takes its name from a national epic poem: the Kalevala. Many of these pieces have been created in collaboration with archaeologists, and reproduce symbols, shapes, and patterns from the Viking era.
The craftsmanship of glass and ceramics offers pieces of all shapes both for household items and daily use objects as well as for unique pieces created by famous designers.
The best-known factories are Arabia, for ceramics and porcelain; Littala, Riihimaki and Nuutajarvi for glass articles. All pieces can be purchased at sales points or in department stores in the most important cities. In Helsinki, for example, along the Esplanade, there are several showrooms of these houses.
Those who love fabrics can stock up on high-quality cotton and linen garments; warm wool shawls or tapestries to beautify the home. Another important sector not to be overlooked is sports and leisurewear, with a vast, widespread and excellent quality offer. Numerous are also the chain department stores, including Anttila, Citymarket, Sokos and the well-stocked Stockmann, with sales points in Helsinki, Espoo (Tapiola), Tampere, Turku and Oulu. Those going to Lapland can devote themselves to Sami handicrafts and typical local flavors, including reindeer meat and game packed vacuum-sealed for travel. Finally, it is forbidden to leave without taking home a flask of vodka or a liqueur made with berries from the Finnish forest: wildberries and arctic raspberries (lakka and mesimarja), and bog myrtle (tarpalo).
