Il Museum dedicated to the Roman Republic of 1849 dedicated to this important historical event is located inside Porta San Pancrazio, which, besides being evocative of the events for its history and location, becomes a hub connected to other places dedicated to the history of the Risorgimento period in Rome (Napoleonic Museum; Museum of Rome at Palazzo Braschi; Central Museum of the Risorgimento, Museum of Rome in Trastevere).

The collection consists of busts, paintings, engravings, and Garibaldian relics. Models and a very rich multimedia system guide the visitor to discover the places, dates, and main protagonists of the events of those years of great political ferment. Room by room it is thus possible to retrace the evolution of the events that led, from the European uprisings of 1848 and passing through the liberal phase of Pius IX, to the pontiff’s flight to Gaeta and the proclamation of the Roman Republic until its tragic end in July 1849 following the very harsh clashes in which the Roman troops opposed the overwhelming forces of the French army.

The visit concludes by showing the continuity of life in the Garibaldian tradition which, gloriously participating in the defense of the Republic, was also a protagonist in much of the 20th century’s history.
