Museo Istituto Tecnico Nautico Leon Pancaldo, Savona

Opened in May 2009, on the top floor of the historic headquarters of the Nautical Institute “Leon Pancaldo” with the aim of collecting, restoring and safeguarding the very rich heritage of instruments, machinery, historical laboratory equipment, ancient volumes and memories of an Institute which, founded in 1856, has trained thousands of students in its long history and has carried the name of Savona to the world.

The exhibition covers an area of 500 square meters and includes various sections: the gallery of paintings of Graduates throughout the long history of the Institute, historical photos of the port city of Savona in the early 1900s, models of vintage ships, historical laboratory equipment for physics and electrical engineering, instruments and on-board equipment, perfectly functioning models of steam engines, models of marine engines, technical drawings made by students in the 1950s-60s, a classroom dedicated to port operators, a study-library housing ancient books, a meteorological station with nineteenth-century instruments, perfectly working, which daily transmits data to be sent to ARPAL and the Ministry of Agriculture, the large historic planetarium, one of the few operating in Italy.
