Il Museo is housed inside the elegant rooms of the current Episcopal Seminary, formerly the Jesuit college of Molfetta, built starting in 1610. It was indeed the Jesuits who initiated an important cultural activity in the Adriatic town. As early as the 1830s, Mons. Filippo Giudice Caracciolo arranged the setup of some museum rooms at this location, with the first collection of archaeological material from the Pulo di Molfetta, belonging to the archpriest and Molfettese scholar G. M. Giovene (1753-1837). Subsequently, the collection was enriched by artifacts from the archaeological areas of Terlizzi and Bisceglie, gathered by Archdeacon Francesco Samarelli, and by donations from private collectors (Cascarano – de Trizio). After a period of stagnation, the reopening is credited to Mons. Achille Salvucci (1935-1978) and the establishment of the Museum-Pinacoteca in 1980 to Mons. Aldo Garzia. In the following years, due to the growth of the museum’s assets, the Diocesan Museum underwent several restructurings until the current reorganization ordered by Bishop Mons. Luigi Martella, who restored it for public accessibility on June 18, 2009, and entrusted its management to a cooperative of young people who have overseen its care since January 2010.
