Il Museo della Ceramica di Cutrofiano was established in 1985 as a simple exhibition of traditional terracotta produced in the past by local artisans (both as a promotion of an activity that has characterized the town since ancient times, and as a testimony of ways of life now disappeared). This initial collection has been enriched over time through successive donations and also through the purchase of a small collection of majolica. Furthermore, the need to historically document local production led to a survey of the territory with the identification of some archaeological sites. The Museum, since its establishment, has coexisted with the Municipal Library, which has a special section dedicated to studies on ceramics. The Museum was enriched, in the summer of 2010, with an entire collection of terracotta whistles, a gift from Mario Briosi. Mario Briosi, a Milanese collector, after a visit to the Cutrofiano museum, given the quality of the museum’s collection and the passion and skills of those who cared for it, thought that his collection of whistles, the result of exceptional culture and passion but also of research lasting decades, could be promoted as he wished within the museum.
