“La archaeological documentation of Rutigliano, a Peucetian center known as Azetium, has been acquired through excavations and research in the territory. The prehistoric section preserves ceramic materials of various types dating from the 11th to 7th centuries BC. The classical age section (6th-3rd centuries BC) mainly includes funeral equipment from the vast and rich necropolises present. There are also Roman-era finds discovered in the Purgatorio area, and signs of a Byzantine and Lombard settlement located near the ruins of Sant’Apolinare. The Museum testifies with its collections and finds to a time span from the Neolithic to the imperial and early medieval age, without interruption. This richness, this peculiarity of the Rutigliano Civic Museum distinguishes it from other museums in Puglia and makes it an emblematic example worthy of note, which we aim to highlight in order to appropriately promote its collections, especially the “Colamussi” collection and the “Dioguardi” collection. The museum is currently closed to the public for organizational and management reasons.”
