“La archaeological documentation of Rutigliano, a Peucetian center known as Azetium, has been acquired through excavations and research in the territory. The prehistoric section preserves ceramic materials of various types dating from the 11th to 7th century BC. The classical age section (6th-3rd century BC) mainly includes funerary equipment from the vast and rich necropolises present. There are also Roman age artifacts found in the Purgatorio district, and signs of a Byzantine and Lombard settlement located near the ruins of Sant’Apolinare. The Museum testifies with its collections and artifacts a time span from the Neolithic to the imperial and early medieval age, without interruption. This richness, this peculiarity of the Civic Museum of Rutigliano distinguishes it from other museums in Apulia and makes it an emblematic example worthy of note, which aims to properly promote its collections, above all the “Colamussi” collection and the “Dioguardi” collection. The museum is temporarily closed to the public for organizational and management reasons.”
