The birth of the museum dates back to 1865 and is linked to the figure of Canon Giovanni Chelli, who began to arrange various ancient objects in the library he opened to the public. In 1933, thanks to another clergyman, A. Cappelli, the Museum of Sacred Art was opened. In 1975, the two museums were merged in the current location thanks to an agreement between the Municipality and the Diocese. Closed in 1992 for renovation works, the museum was reopened on March 21, 1999, in a renewed form.
