Great viewpoint to enjoy the spectacle of the city seen from above, the Troyana tower, or Clock tower, is one of the symbols of Asti and is located near the Ducal or Governor’s palace, overlooking Piazza Medici. The construction took place at the end of the 12th century and around the mid-13th century it became the property of the Troya family. Between 1250 and 1280, completion with the upper battlements occurred. Throughout the 19th century, the tower’s bell marked the hours, the retreat for the night, and the signal for school openings. In earlier times, it also signaled the closing of shops and the punishments administered in the public square.
Inside, a staircase of 199 steps allows visitors to reach the battlement floor. The bell, which still marks the passage of time today, is one of the oldest in Piedmont.
