The museum is housed in the monumental complex of the former Clarisse convent (late 16th century).
The laboratory was created to communicate the results of the archaeological survey carried out in the city center between 1998 and 2003.
The exhibition project is divided into two phases: the first provides a series of rooms, arranged chronologically, dedicated to the various periods of the city’s history (from the late Renaissance to the early Middle Ages). The second is methodological. The visitor learns about events through archaeological investigation methods based on three channels of information: the work done by the archaeologist on the excavation, the testimony of what was found, and the synthesis activity carried out by the archaeologist who, interpreting the data, proposes a historical reconstruction.
The exhibition also makes extensive use of computer technologies. In the rooms, there are graphic reconstructions of scenes of daily life documenting the social structure, economy and trade, and material culture of the city of Grosseto.
