Il Palazzo di Città offers an exhibition path divided into two sections: the west wing and the east wing, accessible respectively from Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and Via Sebastiano Satta.
The west wing houses on the ground floor the “Memory and Identity” room, which offers an immediate representation of the places, memory, and city identity, and the “Form and Image” room, which presents the graphic representation of the urban core within the city walls and a collection of nineteenth and twentieth-century photographic images.
From the first floor, through the monumental staircase, you access the representative rooms, among which stands out the “Intregu” room. Here the ceremony of homage of the Guilds to the Authorities is held on the occasion of the “Faradda” of the Candlesticks on August 14th. On the upper floors, there is a small educational room
and the room dedicated to the Candlesticks, while, in the attic spaces, supported by the original wooden beams, the mechanism of the clock dated 1867 is located, perfectly functioning.
The east wing houses the Documentation Center on the history of the city. On the two upper floors, there are exhibits on the theme of traditional clothing in daily life between city and countryside. The first floor offers reproductions of clothes of the affluent city class of the early 1820s, along with watercolors by Giuseppe Cominotti (1792–1833) illustrating them. In the same room there are reproductions of buttons and silver ornaments made by local artisans. The second floor hosts clothing styles of adult commoners, children, and women who practiced humble trades and small commerce. On the third floor, the “Sacred and Profane” room is set up, divided into two sections dedicated to city religiosity, with particular reference to Holy Week rituals and typically popular expressions of the festival, such as Carnival. The two aspects are well represented in the room of works by Eugenio Tavolara (1901-1963) with the procession of the “Procession of the Mysteries” (1929) and the “Sassarese Masquerade” (1937).
The Palazzo di Città, as a privileged place of representation and custodianship of memory and identity, is the heart of the municipality of Sassari. It is also home to the civic theater, whose fine architectural forms date back to the nineteenth-century refoundation.
