Istituited in 1972 as an ethnographic collection, it was born from the will of the local Pro Loco with the aim of preserving the testimonies of the peasant and artisanal world that was inevitably disappearing. The museum route includes two visit paths, the first of a historical-architectural nature, while the second focuses on the deepening of ethno-anthropological and territorial aspects. Thus, both the settlement and life habits of the ancient peoples who inhabited the hills over the long time span from the Paleolithic to the fall of the Roman Empire, as well as the life and work of the inhabitants of this territory in the early decades of the twentieth century, are documented. The historical-architectural route illustrates the origin and development of the fortress city of Terra del Sole, a rare Renaissance example of a fortified city, with special attention to the political-administrative functions of the Palazzo Pretorio, the current seat of the museum. The archaeological materials on display bear witness to the various ancient ceramic and lithic productions. Completing the route, a virtual visit to the Palace Dungeons is proposed, otherwise inaccessible to safeguard the delicate microclimate that has so far allowed the preservation of frescoes and graffiti. The ethno-anthropological itinerary develops through fourteen rooms, where customs and traditions, traditional home furnishings, domestic work, various meeting occasions in the social life of the past, artisanal work tools, the wheat and wine cycle, and the large tools used in the countryside are illustrated. The large room dedicated to the territory was created in collaboration with the Department of Geological and Environmental Geographic Sciences of the University of Bologna. The path includes a series of steps that illustrate how, through thematic maps obtained by modern computerized processing techniques, the territory can be studied, represented, and therefore read.
