Il Museo is hosted, since July 1965, inside the Convent of Sant’Antonio which was built in the second half of the 13th century as a Franciscan convent, wanted and completed by the Filangieri family. In 1989 the paintings that decorate the vault of the room hosting the necropolises section were brought to light, called the “room of the conspiracy” because tradition holds that here the cardinals met to conspire against Urban VI in 1385. Most of the documentation on display comes from excavations conducted by the Directorate of Provincial Museums of Salerno from 1957 onwards, both in the urban center of ancient Nuceria (current Nocera Superiore) and in its necropolises, to which private collections such as those of the Pisani and Bove families and those of local authorities such as the Municipality of Angri are added. The visit to the Provincial Archaeological Museum of the Agro Nocerino does not follow, due to space problems, a chronological route and therefore the artifacts conform to the exhibition rooms, sometimes obtained, like the small Lapidary room, even along a short staircase. The route described in broad terms, focusing on some materials subject to detailed studies, is thus inevitably discontinuous in the dating of the artifacts. Starting therefore from stone elements, among which particular importance is given to an early Christian sarcophagus at the entrance and the anthropomorphic funerary steles in the small Lapidary room, one arrives at the small room with antiquities from Angri and Scafati; the Pisani Collection indicates the transition from the Culture of the Sarno Valley to the birth of Nuceria, whose life is then illustrated by the testimonies of finds in the urban area and in the necropolises, which occupy the most substantial part of the exhibition.
