The main town, Portree, is a charming little town that was the scene of the fugitive Bonnie Prince Charlie.
The picturesque little harbor, framed by colorful houses, is an excellent base for pleasant boat trips. To the northwest, at the end of the rugged Loch Dunvegan, stands Dunvegan Castle, the historic headquarters of the Mac Leod clan, with fascinating rooms full of paintings, trophies, and curious objects.
