In the rooms where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) stayed during his trip to Rome from 1786 to 1788 together with Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein and other German artists, the only German museum abroad, the Goethe House, was inaugurated in 1997.

Since September 2012, the Goethe House has additional spaces on the second floor. A permanent exhibition with texts in German, Italian, and English tells of the poet’s journey to Italy and his Roman stay.
Temporary exhibitions are often dedicated to Italian-German themes and the tradition of traveling to Italy up to the present day.
The House has its own collection.

Central themes of the collecting activity are Goethe and his work, German artists in Italy, the history of illustrations, the tradition of traveling to Italy, and Italian landscapes. The collection includes graphic works, drawings, paintings, autographs, sculptures, installations, portfolios, and books.
