What to See in Abruzzo

Abruzzo has many facets, probably due to its geographical layout that makes it both outward-looking, thanks to the sea frontage, and inwardly focused because of the mountainous nature of its hinterland.

The region is divided into four provinces: L’Aquila, Chieti, Pescara and Teramo. It borders to the north with the Marche, to the east it is washed by the Adriatic Sea, to the west with Lazio and to the south with Molise.

From a naturalistic point of view, Abruzzo is home to rare animal species (such as the Marsican bear or the Abruzzo chamois) and plants typical of these areas; to preserve this richness, several parks have been established: the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, the Maiella National Park, the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, and the Sirente Velino Regional Park.

Not only sea and nature but also art in Abruzzo: L’Aquila, Chieti and Teramo hold jewels of ancient splendor, such as churches, historic palaces, and museums; Giulianova also stands out as an urban expression of the ideal Renaissance city; Sulmona, with its tradition of sugared almonds, renowned worldwide; and there are many mountain villages and small towns to visit.
