Guide to the Three Passes Tour in Switzerland

It is an entirely mountainous circuit, carved into the central Switzerland area, among the cantons of Valais, Bern and Uri, offering stunning environments and landscapes, marked precisely by three high mountain passes: the Furka Pass, the Susten Pass, and the Grimsel Pass.

The journey starts from the town of Andermatt, taking the Furka road 19 (opened in 1866), which climbs the wooded slopes of the Urseren valley, opening breathtaking views of the Furkareuss ravine and culminating at the Pass (2431 meters), which leads directly into Valais.

On clear days, the view of the Alps and the Rhône Valley is superb. During the quick descent, you pass the Rhonegletscher, the massive Rhône glacier, at the foot of which lies the renowned tourist and ski resort of Gletsch (1760 meters).

The Three Passes Tour in Switzerland then continues on the Grimsel Strasse(no. 6), which connects Furka with the Upper Rhône Valley and the Bernese Oberland. After passing the picturesque and lonely Totensee lake at 2144 meters, you reach the Grimsel Pass (2165 meters), which opens the gates to the canton of Bern. The descent is quite fast and offers lunar-like landscapes, marked by artificial lakes such as Grimselsee and Raterichsbodensee. Upon reaching the village of Innertkirchen, you leave road 6 to continue on road 11, which leads to the third pass, the Susten, at 2224 meters.
