Snow Train in Switzerland: Glacier Express

It’s called the Snow Train or the Glacier Express but is also known as the glacier train: it covers 291 bridges, 91 tunnels, a crossing at 2,033 meters, the Oberalp Pass, and crosses the world’s longest narrow-gauge train tunnel, the 15.4-kilometer Furka tunnel, all in 7 and a half hours.

The Conches valley, through whose bed the Rhone flows, will be traversed almost entirely, and the spectacular Ruinaulta gorges, where the Upper Rhine gracefully winds, almost defying the harshness of the landscape, will be traveled in complete tranquility while you are comfortably seated in the warm compartments of Swiss railway carriages; and almost suddenly the red snow train, which often runs on a single track, will immerse itself in the extraordinary landscape of the Medel glacier, which, presenting itself in all its majesty to your eyes, will be a milestone during this fantastic journey.

The Glacier Express snow train railway route runs between Brig and Chur, crossing the Canton of Graubünden, the Upper Valais, and the Gotthard massif, skirting the Swiss side of the Alps, with the Matterhorn and Pizzo Bernina. A journey through the winter landscapes of the high Swiss mountains is certainly impossible for most people, but thanks to the special “Glacier Express” train, the rugged snow-covered mountains magically become accessible.

The glacier train runs the railway stretch between the stations of Brig and Chur, departing at 11:46 and arriving at 16:10; the ticket price includes a meal, which will be served in the beautiful dining car, furnished with brass, mahogany, and period upholstery.
