Perugino Hall, Florence

The museum occupies the Chapter Hall of the convent of Santa Maria Maddalena de’ Pazzi, originally belonging to the “converted or penitents” of the Benedictine order (1257-1442), later to the Cistercians of Badia a Settimo (1442-1628), and finally to the Carmelites of Santa Maria Maddalena de’ Pazzi, who lived there until the post-unification suppressions (1866).

The Perugino Hall houses the fresco featuring the Crucifixion, the Virgin, Saint John, Magdalene, and Saints Bernard and Benedict, created by Perugino between 1493 and 1496 commissioned by Dionigi and Giovanna Pucci. In the same hall there is also the detached fresco and its sinopia depicting Saint Bernard welcoming the body of Christ, probably executed in 1506 by a pupil of Perugino, Sperandio di Giovanni.

The Perugino Hall is now accessible from via della Colonna no. 9, the main entrance to the Michelangiolo High School. Visits are possible on established days as long as they do not coincide with school holidays or school closures.
