Located in Portugal, the Rota Vicentina trail stretches along the Southwestern coast, closely connected with the rugged power of the Atlantic Ocean and the typical Lusitanian culture. A fascinating and still little-known trek that will not disappoint even the most demanding hikers.

The Rota Vicentina trail extends in the southwest of Portugal, in two wonderful regions such as Alentejo and Algarve. The route, 350 km long, is composed of the Historical Way and the Fishermen’s Trail. The first route covers 230 km and runs through the main towns and rural villages of southern Portugal. Made up of many country roads and rural landscapes, it will immerse you in an experience closely connected to the local culture.

It starts from Santiago do Cacem to reach Cabo de S. Vicente, the last outpost of Western Europe. Picturesque villages, churches, bridges, and rivers form the backdrop of a pastoral landscape where the main characters are farmers and fishermen. Additionally, you will admire the unique cork trees — Portugal is the world’s leading cork producer — and savor the delicious dishes of the Alentejo region. The Historical Way consists of 12 daily stages, accessible both by bike and on foot. The second route, called the Fishermen’s Trail, is shorter but very evocative. Entirely running along the Atlantic coast and covering 120 km, the itinerary will bring you in contact with the wild oceanic landscape. Surreal, entirely unexplored beaches will form the background, seagulls and storks will accompany your journey, and typical local restaurants will await your arrival in the evening with delicious seafood recipes.

It starts from Portocovo and ends at Odeceixe in four daily stages that can only be traveled on foot. The Fishermen’s Trail also has five circuits in addition to the stages already planned on the route. A breathtaking journey, characterized by long stretches of beaches and the towering oceanic cliffs, a gathering place for various bird species.

Rota Vicentina Route

In the southwest of Portugal, 144 kilometers south of Lisbon, it is possible to undertake the Rota Vicentina trail. There are two types of routes: one called “Historical Way” and the other “Fishermen’s Trail.” The first route begins at Santiago do Cacem and ends at Cabo de S. Vicente covering a length of a full 350 kilometers.

The other route, the Fishermen’s Trail, is the most evocative as it runs entirely along the Atlantic coast. It starts from Porto Covo and finishes at Odeceixe covering 75 km. The Fishermen’s Trail also offers 6 circuits:

  • Odeceixe Beach Circuit: 9 km
  • Amoreira Beach Circuit: 6 km
  • Ponta da Atalaia Circuit: 14 km
  • Pontal da Carrapateira Circuit: 10 km
  • Telheiro Beach Circuit: 6 km

The route is fully marked and well organized. Several accommodation facilities are available where travelers can rest overnight. The trail is organized in daily stages ranging from 15 km up to over 20 km.

Regarding the characteristics of the two routes, as previously mentioned, the Fishermen’s Trail is the most evocative.

You will find yourself facing kilometers and kilometers of wild coastline with unspoiled beaches and majestic rocks. The Historical Way, on the other hand, offers a more inland trek but does not lack coastal stretches.
