The Walter Ferrarotti Center for Playful Culture is a place for information, training, documentation, exhibition space, meeting point, and exchange. It offers a concrete example of what playful culture means.
Reopened in a larger new location in 1997, the Center is the cornerstone of the complex of services that are the Play Culture Centers (toy libraries and Play Groups in Hospitals) and the activities designed and carried out there. It permanently houses:
- the Peremprüner collection, more than two thousand toys and games from Italian folk tradition;
- the Games from Around the World collection, about six hundred toys from all over the world;
- the permanent exhibition “Games, Toys, and Amusements in Antiquity,” fifty-four panels tracing the history of play and toys in ancient times;
- Modern Times, an exhibition of about a hundred vintage industrially produced toys from the 20th century, complemented by collections of catalogs;
- 1000 Years of Games, a research project presented on an interactive CD, collecting the history of play and toys from the Middle Ages to Industrialization through artistic iconography;
- the collection of collections, a permanent exhibition of about a hundred collectible themes, ranging from the usual to the unusual, continually enriched by embracing new trends.
The Center aims to welcome playful objects that not only testify to the evolution of toys from antiquity to today but also stimulate reflection and research on what defines a toy.
